Do’s and Dont’s in co working spaces: Etiquette

A MUST READ FOR ANYONE THINKING OF, OR ALREADY WORKING IN A CO WORKING SPACE!

Working in an open space with many different types of people can be difficult if you let it. Working in a co working space is a bit like living with roommates. You may not necessarily know each other that well but you have to spend a lot of time together in a small confined space whilst making sure things run smoothly.

There are both negatives and positives to working in a co-working spaces but I think the positives outweigh the negatives. Not only do you get the chance to meet and work with so many inspiring and motivated people but it’s in an creative an forward-thinking environment. A co-working space is the perfect environment for a business to grow. As long as you keep to these few simple co working etiquette you’ll have no issues at all.

TAKE PHONE CALLS PRIVATELY:

MOST CO WORKING SPACES HAVE MEETING ROOMS AND QUIET SPACES IN WHICH YOU CAN TAKE YOUR PHONE CALLS… USE THESE! THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN TRYING TO CONCENTRATE OVER THE SOUND OF BUSINESS CALLS. IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE THAT SOMETIME YOU NEED TO STAY IN FRONT OF YOUR COMPUTER TO TAKE CALLS BUT GENERALLY IT IS RESPECTFUL TO YOUR FELLOW WORKERS TO TAKE THE CALL ELSEWHERE.

KEEP IT TIDY:

THIS IS QUITE OBVIOUS BUT YOU’D BE SURPRISED WITH SOME PEOPLE! MAKE SURE TO TRY AND KEEP THE SPACE YOU WORK IN AS NEAT AS POSSIBLE AS IT NOT ONLY HELPS YOU TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE BUT HELPS THOSE AROUND YOU TO HAVE PEACE OF MIND IN A CLEAN WORK ENVIRONMENT.

DON’T BE KIDS IN THE KITCHEN:

YOU ARE ALL ADULTS THUS KNOW WHO TO CLEAN UP YOUR DISHES AFTER YOURSELF, PUT THINGS IN A DISHWASHER OR HAND WASH AND DRY THEM SO THE NEXT PERSON CAN USE THEM.

HAVE SOME FOOD RESPECT:

IF YOU BUY FOOD AND PUT IT IN THE COMMUNAL KITCHEN DO THE RIGHT THING AND LABEL YOUR FOOD AND DON’T EAT THINGS THAT AREN’T YOURS. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND… KARMA!

SAY HELLO:

MAKE SURE TO BE FRIENDLY TO YOUR FELLOW CO WORKERS. DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE POLITE AND SAY HELLO OR SMILE AT A PASSING WORKER OR EVEN START A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE- YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IDEAS MIGHT STEM FROM A SHORT CHAT!

LEAVE YOU NDA AT THE DOOR:

NON DISCLOSURE AGREEMENTS NEED TO BE LEFT AT THE DOOR AS IT’S ALL ABOUT TRUSTING YOUR FELLOW WORKERS AND WHEN IT COMES TO SHARING IDEAS, HAVE RESPECT AND DIGNITY.

GETTING PEOPLE’S ATTENTION:

THIS IS A BIT OF A HIT AND MISS AS EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT SO SOME PEOPLE MIGHT HATE IT, OTHERS MIGHT NOT MIND IT AT ALL. GETTING PEOPLE’S ATTENTION IS A TRICKY TASK. GENERALLY IF PEOPLE ARE ON PHONE CALLS; LEAVE THEM UNTIL THEY ARE FREE AGAIN. IF PEOPLE HAVE THEIR HEADPHONE IN AND LOOK ‘IN THE ZONE’; BEST TO LEAVE THEM TO THEIR HARD WORKING MINDSET WHILST IT LASTS. IF IT IS URGENT MAYBE SEND THEM A QUICK MESSAGE FIRST AND ASK IF THEY ARE FREE TO CHAT BEFORE APPROACHING THEM.

NO NEGATIVE VIBES:

NO ONE WANTS A NEGATIVE NANCY IN THE ROOM. IF YOU’RE HAVING A BAD DAY KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. DON’T START GOING ON ABOUT HOW YOUR TRAIN WAS DELAYED AND YOU MISSED A BUSINESS CALL AND YOUR COFFEE WAS TOO HOT- NO ONE REALLY CARES AND IT JUST BRINGS OTHERS DOWN!

RETURN THE FAVOUR:

THIS GOES FOR ANY ASPECT IN LIFE BUT IF SOMEONE TAKES THE TIME TO HELP YOU WITH SOMETHING REMEMBER TO RETURN THE FAVOUR AND GIVE THEM SOME OF YOUR TIME IN RETURN. EVEN IF IT’S AS SMALL AS SOMEONE MAKING YOU A COFFEE REMEMBER TO THANK THEM AND ENSURE YOU MAKE A MENTAL NOTE (OR PHYSICAL NOTE IF YOU’RE THE FORGETFUL TYPE) TO MAKE IT UP TO THEM.

GET INVOLVED!:

THERE WILL MOST LIKELY BE PLENTY OF EVENTS, TALKS, SHOWCASES AND LAUNCHES AT THE SPACE SO BE SURE TO GET INVOLVED AND SUPPORT YOUR FELLOW CO WORKERS. YOU MAY LEARN A THING OR TWO AND IT SHOWS YOUR SUPPORT AND WILLINGNESS TO LEARN!

Most of these are pretty simple things to remember to do but they go a long way. There are so many co working spaces around the country and even the world. Getting involved in them is an excellent idea, one you and your business will be grateful for!
