Getting help with your online store

There are many different ways to gain help with you online store and there are many different reasons you may need that help.

The key is to knowing where to find help when you need it and know who you can rely on for what tasks, what costs money and what you can get for free.

Youtube

You are reading this blog post, most likely you have watched the corresponding video. This means that you have found one of the quickest and cheapest forms of help you will find, search the issue you are facing and nine times out of ten someone has made a video fixing the problem you are facing.

This will be used for when you are in a DIY situation and have the time but maybe not the money to pay someone to do it for you.

The shopify environment

Shopify offers many resources to help you become a successful Shopify merchant.

The standard documentation on technical modifications of the platform is a great place where you can find guides and tutorials about technical issues on in relation to your site.

If you can't figure out how to do something, you can always ask support on their 24/7 online chat, when using this I would make a point to try and use screen shots and be very concise with your instructions otherwise you will waste your own time and Shopify’s.

Again using the Shopify help line will be in those cases when you are doing it yourself and learning along the way. I always will advise business owners and marketing staff of businesses to always try to solve the problem first, as this provides a learning experience and if you cannot get it to work then you can get in touch with an expert.

The beautiful thing is about this is that it is free and adhoc!

The Shopify Experts Portal:

Here you will find developers and agencies from all around the world. We are official "Shopify Experts" and just like many other agencies can handle anything from your site build, to logo and branding design, onto custom applications, 'go to market' strategies and growth marketing services.

When you start to contract an agency you step into the realm of professional services and will pay for the experience you get from that engagement. Each agency or developer is different in the way they place them selves in the market.

A little on Acacia and as an agency how we work

At Acacia Digital we stick by one rule, we help people build great online businesses rather than just their websites. The reasoning behind this is the following:

Very often when people will come to us wanting to build a fully functioning website with a range of different custom functions at the start of their business. In actual fact what they need is to test their business assumptions and build something at a minimal cost to gain their first customers.

Rather than spending $10k on a website, start up businesses can work with us to spend $1500 onwards on a basic website and then save the rest of their money for market testing and building an captive audience to sell to.

This approach suits some people and some people and businesses it doesn't suit, its all about understanding where you want to go and what you have to work with.

My advice on finding help

If you are non technical then I would advise that you learn as much as you can, before building a relationship with ideally an agency who can facilitate ‘strategy advice, website development & sales and marketing functions’. Invest in that relationship and it will save you a lot of time and frustration.

A summary

  1. Youtube = DIY
  2. Shopify Help = DIY + Assistance
  3. Hiring an agency = Contracted work in partnership
